Boris Grishenko (Борис Грищенко (Russian)) is a programmer, hacker and a secondary villain in GoldenEye 007. He works at the Satellite Control Bunker in Severnaya as a prideful and arrogant first level programmer, and is also a former "friend" of Natalya Simonova (of whom he desperately tries to get attention). He then completely betrays Russia, and starts working for Alec Trevelyan and Janus Crime Syndicate. He is noted to have controls over the GoldenEye from the Janus Control Center in exchange for money. Essentially, Boris can also be classified as a "sort-of scientist", because of his programming/hacking skills. However, so can be said about Natalya.

Boris appears twice in GoldenEye 007. His first appearance is in Bunker (i), where he is not known to Bond and instead known to him as the 'Programmer'. Bond holds him hostage and forces him to disable the mainframe's security (turn on the mainframe computer, as well) there, but later on, Boris accidentally (or perhaps intentionally) sets off the alarm after inputting the "KNOCKERS" password. His second appearance is in Control, where he will possibly try to pull out a weapon on Bond. However, the weapon will most likely to slip through his hand and Boris starts to beg for mercy from Bond, saying "Trevelyan made me do it". He then runs away shouting "Aha! I am invincible!". However, Bond can actually kill Boris before he runs away by performing a certain glitch. If Boris is killed before Natalya is let through the doors/gates, however, Natalya says that she had noticed this and will go back to the elevator, thus failing the mission.

However, there is a "third" "appearance" of Boris, as well. It is in Train, as he had set up a password that Natalya and Bond need to crack. In the movie, the password is "CHAIR", while in GoldenEye 007, the name of the password is absolutely unknown. In the movie, Natalya desperately tries to crack the password, however, eventually Bond helps her after noticing it, and suggests word "chair" as password, which works. In GoldenEye 007, however, the password is never revealed and for some reason, Natalya cracks it after guessing Boris' location.

Weapons Used[]

The weapon Boris pulls out in Control is a PP7 Special Issue.

Boris never uses this weapon, as it slips through his hand...

It can also be noted that, Boris doesn't usually use any kind of weapons, as in his first appearance in GoldenEye 007 (Bunker 1), he is completely armless and is busy with a computer.

Multiplayer[]

  • He is the 6th character on the roster.
  • He is slightly shorter than most characters.
  • He is the only character in the game to naturally wear glasses.

Notes[]

  • Boris can be killed in Bunker (i) without failing the mission. Bond can murder the programmer immediately on Agent, but on higher difficulties he must first force Boris to take him to the mainframe terminal and disable the security. After downloading data from the computer using the datathief (and after the alarm has gone off), Bond can then kill Boris and still complete the mission. However, oddly enough, he later comes back in Control without any injuries.
  • In Control, Boris is actually not meant to be killed. If Bond does kill him, Natalya will refuse to operate the computer.
  • Alan Cumming is the only actor to have played the role of Boris, and his likeness is used in game.
  • In the film, Boris seemingly "dies" after being frozen solid by a wave of liquid nitrogen (But may have really died.) In the game, however, he is last seen fleeing from Bond (unless he is killed in a glitch).
  • Similarly, if the player follows Boris when he flees in Control, he will run to a secret alcove (That contains full body armor) on the top floor before standing in a corner and disappearing.
  • In the film, Boris' catchphrase is "Y-y-yes!... I am invincible!" In the game, however, he begins his catchphrase with "Aha!" rather than "Yes!"
  • Strangely, Boris does not appear in the 2010 Wii re-imagining, Reloaded or DS version of GoldenEye 007.
  • In the film Boris was quite prideful and arrogant mocking his fellow programmers (especially Natalya) for being second level programmers where he is the more "superior" first level computer programmer. Where in the game he is more "humble" in the Bunker level but seems to be arrogant and prideful again in Control.
  • The password that Boris types into the mainframe is "KNOCKERS". Another password (Not featured in GoldenEye 007, but in the film), was in Train, when Natalya tries to crack it, was "CHAIR" password. It is suspected that the "KNOCKERS" password may actually be in reference to how Boris is childish and foolish in such a villainous organization as the Janus Crime Syndicate.

Glitches[]

  • (Noted also to be a 'trick', because of it's nature) - There is a special glitch which allows the player to kill Boris in Control without failing the mission. When the player enters the room Boris is standing in, they should ignore him and run towards the stairs while staying as far away from Boris as possible. When Natalya goes to her computer, the player can quickly run back to Boris and kill him. Natalya will continue doing what she's doing while she suspects nothing.
